educational trip '81
This was our only educational/field trip in the seminary. It was a rainy, cold & wet edu. trip but was really worthwhile and very memorable too. We roamed a couple of sites in Albay including the Cagsawa Ruins, a beach in Sto. Domingo, Albay, the St. Gregory Seminary in Tabaco, Albay, and the Legazpi Domestic Airport. I'll post the other pix about this trip nxt time. (pix courtesy of caloy)

olps schola cantorum update from fr. gerry del prado
ronny,
i have been following the different blogspots of olps alumni. it's one of my major leisure activities here on staten island. let me congratulate you for all those wonderful posts - pictures and memorabilia that you seem to attract from everywhere. they make for wonderful memory trips down nostalgia lane. not just for your batch and contemporaries, but most everyone who has walked through the corridors of olps.
which brings me to the small matter of the schola cantorum. in fairness to all those who have studies in the seminary before you - even before us - (as in waaaay before) the seminary did have a grand and respectable tradition of music and choral performance, by way of the olps schola cantorum. by no means was the group that sang at the ccp the first generation -redoubtably the best or one of the best, but certainly not the beginning of the schola cantorum. i just mentioned this because some feathers may be ruffled. fr tony pura trained and conducted that choir, much to his credit, but he will be the first one to tell you that the seminary already had the schola cantorum even in his own days in the minor seminary.
'schola cantorum' actually referred to the seminary choir as a whole. so whenever the olps presented a concert, the performers were always presented as the olps schola cantorum. and we know of course that the seminary has presented a lot of concerts. as for pictures, i am sure you could find a few around. i have a whole album of the schola cantorum concert directed by the late fr ben dino. junie taclan must have memories of that concert. he played the banduria, as one of the instrumentalists. fr ernie mendina will also remember concerts presented in his own time as a seminarian. and we also presented our own concert when we were seminarians. frs pura and ernie, who are both excellent musicians, can give you very good information.
please keep on enriching our present lives by the memories you bring from the past. the future will thank you for it.
regards to chin, the next time you see him.

latest pix
This was the latest pix of our group, taken last Feb. 2. Chin paid us a short visit during his official business w/ Mayor Ding Ramos(pioneer batch of OLPS). We just had a simple merienda of sinapot and ice-cold coke, then off he went 'coz of his very hectic skeds as municipal administrator of Bulan, like sano Junie T. of batch '86. Maybe nxt time he'll pay us a visit, he's the mayor already. HeHeHe!:)

This railings on the opposite side of the big dormitory was one of our favorite places to let time pass by. It was overlooking the coconut trees and the OLVillage behind the seminary. Here w/ me were Jovito "buko" Guysayko of Bulusan and Francis "d' duke of France" Abrantes of OLV, Bibincahan. It was the best location to watch those seminarians frolicking around the coconut trees as if they were happily playing but in reality they were planning and looking for a way to escape to the village. HeHeHe!:)

LATEST PIX OF SANO MIKE O.

YEHEY! Yaa latest pix of sano Mike Oidem. He really still has the same smile as when he left OLPS wayback in 1981 for the states. Not just the smile, but I think he didn't changed a bit 'coz of the way he wrote his email w/ bikol(barcelona) dialect clarity & excellence, except maybe for his bulging belly of "3 mos. on the way". HaHaHa!:) Pareho sira ni Paul P. na 1 lang an bata-batit-aki. It's G-R-E-A-T to hear from you, sano!

CAT - '81
CAT was one of the dreaded highschool subjects that we abhored but should be accomplished.(Latin was the top 1 on the list) Even if we had to train under scourging heat or it's raining cats and dogs, and w/ the fatigue uniform we had to don all the time, fight lang kay kaipohan. The only thing nice was the annual bivouac where we could fire a single shot using an m16 rifle. Here w/ me were Luis "chin" de Castro and the ever-smiling & funny man Michael "mike" Oidem.
